Sheryl Cohen - Not Your Ordinary Singer!

Sheryl Cohen is a New York based musician who travels frequently to Brazil to perform. Sheryl’s current CD "Not An Ordinary Girl" was conceived during a trip to Brazil’s Northeast – Salvador da Bahia.

The city of Salvador is the epicenter for many of Brazil’s most progressive and exciting percussion players. The music of "Not An Ordinary Girl", blends the percussive ideas and rhythmic elements, heard throughout Salvador, with Pop elements and English Lyrics.

Sheryl is an award-winning composer. She is the recipient of ASCAP’S 2005 and 2004 ASCAPLUS AWARD.

Locally, Sheryl has performed with her band at many of New York City's Hot Spots including: Rockwood Music Hall, The Zinc Bar, Piano's and The Slipper Room. She has appeared several times, at Carnegie Hall, as backing vocalist for Angelique Kidjo.

In addition to writing and co-producing "Not An Ordinary Girl", Sheryl co-leads a colorful Brazilian/Jazz quartet called Brazz Jazz. Brazz Jazz has twice toured Brazil, in support of their CD Kick Off Your Shoes, to remarkable success. Their CD has been the focus of several radio shows in Brazil, newspaper articles and a consistent seller in music stores.

“A fundamental aspect of brazz jazz, which sets them apart from their peers, is the choice of material” states Ayrton Martini. Martini a Brazilian music critic and producer adds, “brazz jazz escapes from the Bossa Nova as the obvious translation of Brazilian Jazz”. The repertoire choices are not the usual Jazz standards and the songs are chosen with good taste and originality”.

Sheryl was born in San Francisco. She holds a degree in English Literature from The California State University @ Long Beach. Sheryl attended the Berklee College of Music, on a music scholarship, and graduated with honors.

She is the founder of Copy Cat Music Services, a music transcription and music copying company. Current client list includes: 3 time Grammy nominee Angelique Kidjo.
