Darksky - a ray of sun from Italy's prog rock.

I Darksky nascono nel 1997 per iniziativa dei fratelli Francesco (chitarra) e Massimiliano Diblasio (tastiere), che costituiscono il nucleo storico dei Darksky.

Da allora si sono succedute varie formazioni e con il passare degli anni anche il genere dei brani elaborati si è progressivamente trasformato, pur mantenendo immutate alcune caratteristiche di base.

Dopo la prima esperienza in studio nel 1998, con Shadows, nel 2000, il gruppo realizza il primo mini-CD, Beyond Life, che può definirsi speed-prog metal e che viene distribuito all’estero dall’Underground Symphony. In seguito entrano nel gruppo, in momenti successivi, Francesca Bos (voce nel 2002 nell'album Ad Nauseam del gruppo Monumentum), Alessandro Bertagna (voce), Marco Banfi (basso) e Davide Martinelli (batterista nel 1995 nell'album Rules del
gruppo thrash Alligator), che mettono a disposizione l’esperienza accumulata in band differenti per la realizzazione del mini cd "Crimson Butterfly", pubblicato nel 2005.

Alla fine del 2005, Marco Banfi lascia i Darksky e la line up viene integrata con l’ingresso di Maria Torelli al basso. Infine, nel luglio 2006, dopo un’intensa e proficua collaborazione live e in studio, in seguito ai cambiamenti stilistici intervenuti, i Darksky e Alessandro Bertagna decidono di intraprendere strade diverse.

Il nome Darksky rappresenta perfettamente le caratteristiche essenziali della musica, del sound e dei testi della band, che rimangono immutate nel corso delle varie trasformazioni stilistiche. Il cielo è ampio, spazioso, complesso nella sua eterogeneità e scuro, enigmatico, a volte minaccioso. Ciò può essere una metafora del sound della band: ricco di elementi musicali provenienti da varie influenze (progressive e melodic metal ma anche death, heavy e thrash metal), un sound ampio che amalgama efficacemente generi differenti.

Le basi dei pezzi vengono poste dai fratelli Diblasio e l'intero gruppo successivamente arrangia i pezzi per completarli al meglio. I testi invece vengono curati e limati in modo da amalgamarsi con la musica a livello melodico e ritmico e soprattutto come significato, aspetto questo che viene considerato essenziale.

L’ultimo mini-CD della band Crimson Butterfly contiene tutti gli elementi sopra descritti. Si passa da sound di ampio respiro come l'inizio di Troth Shall Be o Concealed by an Illusion ad altri più cupi e aggressivi come Lex Aeterna, il tutto creando una vera e propria atmosfera dinamica con spunti diversi e coinvolgenti.

Ma la band non si ferma: nell’anno 2007 cominceranno le registrazioni per un nuovo cd, questa volta full lenght, che conterrà l’ennesima evoluzione stilistica e compositiva della band.


Darksky were born in 1997 on the initiative of the Diblasio brothers, Francesco (guitar) and Massimiliano (keyboards), who are the historical nucleus of Darksky. Since then, various line-ups have followed one another and as the years went by also the genre of the pieces designed by the band has progressively been transformed, even though some of its basic characteristics have remained unchanged.

After the first studio experience in 1998, with "Shadows", in 2000, the band realised the first mini-CD, "Beyond Life", that can be defined as speed-prog metal and that was distributed abroad by Underground Symphony. Later on, in different moments, Francesca Bos (vocals in 2002 in the album "Ad Nauseam" by the band Monumentum), Alessandro Bertagna (vocals), Marco Banfi (bass) and Davide Martinelli (drums in 1995 in the album "Rules" by the thrash band Alligator) have entered the band and have placed the experience they had gained with various bands at Darksky’s disposal for the realisation of the mini-CD "Crimson Butterfly", published in 2005.

At the end of 2005, Marco Banfi left Darksky and the line-up was integrated with the entry of Maria Torelli (bass). Finally, in July 2006, after an intense and fruitful live and studio collaboration, following the latest stylistic changes, Darksky and Alessandro Bertagna decided to follow different ways. The moniker Darksky represents perfectly the essential features of the band’s music, sound and lyrics, which have remained unchanged through various stylistic transformations. The sky is wide, spacious, complex in its heterogeneity and dark, enigmatic and sometimes threatening. This can be considered a metaphor of the band’s sound: rich in musical elements coming from various influences (progressive and melodic metal but also death, heavy and thrash metal), a wide sound that combines effectively different genres. The bases of the songs are laid down by the Diblasio brothers and later on the whole band arranges the pieces in order to complete them at best. On the other hand, the lyrics are taken care of and polished so that they mix with the music at the melodic and rhythmic level and above all with the meaning the song would like to convey.

The latest mini-CD of the band "Crimson Butterfly" includes all the above mentioned elements. You can pass from a wide sound such as the beginning of "Troth Shall Be" or "Concealed by an Illusion" to others more hollow and aggressive such as "Lex Aeterna", which creates a really dynamic atmosphere with different and involving cues. Anyway, Darksky have not stopped there: in 2007 the recording of a new CD, a full-length, will start, which will contain the band’s umpteenth evolution in style and composition.
